Fog lights sit lower than your headlights, which means they eat every rock, bug and road-salt spray the tires kick up. They haze over faster than the headlights above them — and on a foggy Baldwin County morning, that is exactly the lamp you need working.

Why fog lights fail first

Mounted down in the bumper, fog light lenses take direct sandblasting from the road. Between the abrasion and the same UV breakdown that kills headlights, the factory hard coat gives up early. Because the lenses are small and low, most people never notice how bad they have gotten until they actually need them on a damp morning coming off the Foley Beach Express.

A hazed fog light does the opposite of its job. Instead of throwing a low, wide, flat beam under the fog layer, a clouded lens scatters that light straight back into the water droplets in front of you. You get a wall of glare rather than the ground-level illumination the lamp was designed for.

What restoration involves

Fog lights get the same multi-stage treatment as headlights, scaled to the smaller lens. We mask off the surrounding bumper and trim, wet sand through progressive grits to cut past the failed coating and the pitting, machine polish back to clarity, then seal with a UV-stable clear coat.

The masking matters more on fog lights than anywhere else on the vehicle, because the lens sits flush against painted bumper cover. That is a big part of why a mobile service with the right setup beats a hardware store kit and a rag.

Do them together

If you are already having the headlights done, adding the fog lights while we are set up in your driveway is the cheapest time to do it. Mismatched clarity is noticeable at night — crisp headlights above yellowed fog lights looks worse than leaving both alone.

Questions about fog lights

Can you restore fog lights without removing the bumper?

In almost every case, yes. We mask the surrounding panel and work the lens in place. If a particular vehicle has a lens recessed so deep that it cannot be worked safely, we will tell you when we see the photo.

Are yellow-tinted fog lights different?

Factory-tinted or film-covered lenses need a look first. Restoration removes surface oxidation from the outside of the lens — if the yellow is a coating or film rather than oxidation, sanding it changes the appearance. Send a photo and we will tell you what you are actually dealing with.
